UTM – Host of the International Conference “2025 RoEduNet: Networking in Education and Research” – A Strategic Step Toward Digitalization and Cybersecurity in the Republic of Moldova

Between September 17–20, 2025, the Technical University of Moldova had the honor of hosting the 24th edition of the RoEduNet International Conference, held under the theme “Networking in Education and Research.” The event brought together over 200 participants, including 120 from abroad—researchers, university professors, doctoral students, digitalization experts, and leaders from academic and governmental spheres—solidifying UTM’s status as a hub of innovation and international collaboration.

The conference, held annually in Romania, is recognized as one of the most significant regional academic platforms dedicated to education and research. The presence in Chișinău of prestigious institutions such as POLITEHNICA Bucharest, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Carnegie Mellon University (USA), and the IEEE Computer Society Romania Chapter underscores the strategic importance of the forum and UTM’s openness to international partnerships.

“For the Republic of Moldova, hosting RoEduNet 2025 is more than just an academic event. Our country is going through a period in which cybersecurity has become a national priority, now an integral part of the government’s agenda. The rise in cyberattacks and growing dependence on digital infrastructure have made this no longer just a technical issue, but one of national security and societal resilience,” stated Doina Nistor, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization of the Republic of Moldova.

In this context, the conference at UTM provided Moldova with the opportunity to engage directly with international partners, access cutting-edge expertise, and build joint projects in the fields of digital infrastructure protection, education, and research.

Dinu Țurcanu, Vice-Rector for Digitalization at UTM and General Co-Chair of the Conference, emphasized the importance of digital infrastructure for the future of education:

“In recent years, the Technical University of Moldova has shown that digitalization is no longer a luxury, but a strategic priority. Academic networks like RoEduNet lay the foundation for a unified academic community capable of collaboration and of meeting the challenges of the digital era. The fact that UTM is hosting this event demonstrates that the Republic of Moldova is an active regional player, ready to contribute to building a safe and competitive digital future.”

Răzvan Rughiniș, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Automation and Computers at POLITEHNICA Bucharest and one of the conference organizers, noted:

“RoEduNet is not just a technical infrastructure, but an ecosystem of people and institutions who share common values: innovation, openness, and social responsibility. In the digital age, research and education transcend borders, and our mission is to build a space where technology serves the good of society.”

Dr. Octavian Rusu, regional manager of the RoEduNet network and lecturer at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, recalled the complex and dedicated journey through which RoEduNet was built and strengthened. He explained how a strategic vision, supported by inter-institutional collaboration and sustained investment, led to the creation of a trustworthy, scalable digital infrastructure tailored to current needs. His message was an invitation to regional cooperation and the construction of a shared digital space for education and research.

Adriana Cazacu, State Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova, delivered a message to the conference participants:

“The Ministry of Education and Research offers institutional support for international scientific collaboration and places emphasis on cooperation between Romania and Moldova across the many dimensions of the conference. I wish the participants success and continued collaboration beyond this event.”

Also present at the conference was Veaceslav Ursachi, Corresponding Member of the Department of Exact and Engineering Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, who highlighted the relevance of the conference’s themes:

“The topics addressed at RoEduNet 2025 are no coincidence. The performance of computing systems, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity are now pillars of scientific and technological development. The Republic of Moldova needs such debates and an active academic community to build sustainable and innovative solutions.”
