UTM 2024 Admissions: Academic Excellence and New Opportunities for the Future

University admissions mark a pivotal milestone in young people’s lives, marking not only the start of an academic journey but also a profound personal and professional transformation. It’s at this stage—where youthful ambitions align with university values—that students are encouraged to discover their full potential. How closely do their aspirations and expectations match those of the Technical University of Moldova? What does the 2024 Admissions landscape look like at UTM?

On October 29, 2024, Radu MELNIC, the Secretary of the Admissions Committee, presented an extensive report to the UTM Senate, summarizing the 2024 Admissions process. The report highlighted the sustained efforts and key steps involved in organizing and conducting admissions, setting a model of academic excellence for today’s youth and inspiring future generations. The Admissions Committee’s work was rated as “excellent,” a reflection of the dedication and professionalism of the entire team.

Recent admissions statistics at UTM show a shift in young people’s preferences, leaning increasingly toward innovative fields that require flexibility. In a world marked by rapid digital and technological advances, UTM is responding to market demands, creating an academic environment that combines creativity with innovation. This year’s admissions are part of that commitment to excellence, providing students with avenues to deepen their knowledge and discover new perspectives for personal and professional growth.

In 2024, UTM enrolled a total of 3,492 undergraduate students, of whom 1,539 secured state-funded places, including 10 part-time students. For fee-based admission, 769 full-time students and 1,184 part-time students were accepted. Additionally, at the master’s level, 779 students were enrolled, 652 of whom received state funding, with 127 on a fee basis.

However, 133 state-funded places at the undergraduate level and 22 at the master’s level remained unfilled, particularly in less popular programs. Voluntary withdrawals remain a challenge, as some students choose to continue their studies abroad or face difficulties in STEM areas, especially those from humanities-focused high schools.

To enhance the appeal of its programs and align academic offerings with labor market needs, UTM has proposed several strategic measures. Based on an analysis of admission results over the past three years and market demands, recommendations will be developed for enrollment plans across fields and study programs at both undergraduate and master’s levels, with a target completion date of December 2024.

UTM also plans to introduce new study programs that reflect market trends and youth interests. To boost program appeal, university leadership, along with faculty deans and department heads, will produce modern and attractive promotional materials. These will include effective methods for showcasing students’ technical creativity through competitions and exhibitions of work by students, master’s students, and doctoral candidates, with involvement from high school students and vocational colleges. This initiative aims to be implemented by February 2025. Additionally, the Career Counseling and Guidance Center will develop a career guidance plan for high school and college graduates, with an eye on 2025 Admissions. This plan, engaging faculty, current students, and UTM alumni, will be presented to the UTM Administrative Council by February 2025.

To streamline the work of the Admissions Committee, a specific action plan will be developed, based on the analysis of 2024/2025 enrollment results and input from UTM Senate members, to be implemented by February 2025. Through these efforts, UTM aims to make its admissions process not just a selection procedure but a deep commitment to preparing a generation focused on innovation and performance. The UTM Senate concluded that, through the hard work of the Admissions Committee and all involved, Admissions 2024 was a success, reinforcing UTM’s role as a promoter of excellence and high-quality academic opportunities for the future.
