A laboratory for specialized training in the field of Information Technology and Cyber Security, supplied with state-of-the-art equipment (MikroTik & Ubiquiti) was inaugurated yesterday, March 9, 2022, at the Technical University of Moldova, within the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications (FET).

The laboratory provides for training of the IT staff from the organizations and agencies in the Republic of Moldova; training of FET students; authorized training at MikroTik Academy; authorized training at Ubiquiti Academy.

The inauguration of the new laboratory was attended by the rector of TUM, univ. prof., Dr. Viorel BOSTAN, the vice-rector for Informatization, Partnerships, Institutional Image and Communication, Dinu ȚURCANU, the head of the Information and Communications Technology Directorate at TUM, Vasile CHETROI, the dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, assoc. prof., Dr. Pavel NISTIRIUC, the head of the Telecommunications and Electronic Systems Department, assoc. prof., Dr. Lilia SAVA, the academic/research staff of the University, FET students, and the IT-LAB company director and FET graduate Alexei CIOBAN, who expressed his appreciation for the education acquired at TUM, reiterating that the inauguration and full endowment of the laboratory (MikroTik & Ubiquiti) was possible due to both the assistance provided by the IT-LAB company and his personal desire to support the future FET graduates. “As partners and advocates of the objectives and activity of the TUM Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, we consider it essential to maintain the continuity of these partnerships between academia and the private sector, in the interest of future FET graduates”, said Mr. Alexei Cioban. The director pointed out that he will continue to provide the necessary support to the faculty in all aspects, including the technical endowment of the faculty, internships, training, etc.

The TUM students attending the Mikrotik Academy will be able to study and implement active network equipment, as well as the MikroTik operating system. The new skills acquired within the MikroTik courses will provide an important foundation in building a career as an engineer in the field of Network Administration. It is important to note that these courses will equip students with the knowledge needed in order to obtain globally recognized MikroTik certificates. Mr. Cioban confirmed that the courses within the MikroTik Academy and the Ubiquiti Academy will be offered free of charge for FET-TUM students.

The rector of TUM thanked Mr. Cioban for his involvement in the endowment of the new laboratory, noting that “the contribution and involvement of TUM in the training of qualified specialists ready to handle new challenges that arise in the field of Electronics and Telecommunications is crucial, and the expected results can of course only be achieved by continuously strengthening training and awareness capabilities. Central public authorities give priority to the IT sector, and such investments in education, training and development will be the guarantor of qualified graduates, but also of a secure cyber environment for citizens and the state”.

In his capacity as vice-rector responsible for the development of the IT sector at TUM, Mr. Țurcanu reiterated that the inauguration of this laboratory is an important and tangible step towards the strengthening of the potential and skills of the specialists so urgently needed today for the securing of IT infrastructures, addressing vulnerabilities, and countering cybersecurity threats.

Mr. Țurcanu also mentioned – “in its role as a MikroTik training Center, the Technical University of Moldova will offer students the opportunity to obtain international industrial certificates, which will be proof of extensive knowledge in IT, but also increase the chances of securing a prospective job in the field. For example, the MTCNA (MikroTik Certified Network Associate) and MTCRE (MikroTik Certified Routing Engineer) Certificates confirm their holders’ expertise in Network Management, ensuring a successful career in the field.”

The event guests Mr. Nistiriuc Pavel, dean of FET, and Lilia Sava, head of TSE Department, thanked the sponsor of this laboratory, mentioning the importance of the technical endowment of the Faculty in training graduates in accordance with labor market requirements. Ms. Sava pointed out that this laboratory is the first partnership between the Faculty and an IT company since taking over the administration of the TSE department, this being an example for further collaborations and discussions with companies in the field of Information Technology and Electronic Communications.

We mention that the Latvian company MikroTik was founded in 1995, and to this day it has managed to become one of the top companies in the production of equipment for communication networks, including wireless equipment. Among the most important products of this company is the RouterOS software, by means of which each computer can be transformed into a router with features such as Firewall, VPN server, VPN client, flow control and wireless access point.

Ubiquiti is world-renowned for producing state-of-the-art wireless networking products using innovative wireless technology. Designed for service providers and businesses, the technology facilitates network infrastructure in the data carrier class for broadband and wireless routing systems.

For TUM, the launch of the MikroTik Academy and Ubiquiti Academy educational program is a good opportunity to attract more students by offering MikroTik and Ubiquiti certificates recognized by employers around the world.
