It’s September 1st, and the Technical University of Moldova is opening its doors to a new academic year with some extraordinary news—UTM is celebrating its 60th anniversary! This milestone represents more than just a significant age; it’s a testament to decades of remarkable achievements and continuous innovation.
First-year students were greeted with a unique surprise: in four years, when they graduate, UTM will be marking another major milestone—95 years since the founding of its first higher education faculty. This highlights the strength and longevity of the university, which recently integrated the State Agrarian University of Moldova (UASM), the only agronomic higher education institution in the Republic of Moldova.
“By studying at UTM, you will have the opportunity to make many discoveries, with the first and most important being the discovery of yourself—your abilities, passions, and talents. Here at UTM, you will find everything you need to develop and expand them,” said UTM Rector, Prof. Viorel BOSTAN, Ph.D., as he welcomed the first-year students at the Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics during their academic year inauguration at the Tekwill building.
The rector reassured the students that they had made the right choice, as UTM has invested massively in modernizing its infrastructure and equipment. In the coming year, UTM will open several new hubs and performance centers, such as the Grigore Moisil Educational and Innovative Center for Informatics and Mathematical Modeling, a modern reading room, and a café, requested by FCIM students. Additionally, UTM’s central campus infrastructure will expand with the opening of the “CYBERCOR” National Institute for Cybersecurity Innovations, which is set to revolutionize the field of cybersecurity in Moldova. Future generations can expect to find a university that evolves and advances each year.
Across all 11 faculties of UTM, the academic year inauguration ceremonies were honored by university leaders and distinguished guests from various fields. At the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, UTM’s Vice-Rector for Digitalization, Assoc. Prof. Dinu ȚURCANU, Ph.D., described his presence as a “homecoming,” being an FET-UTM graduate himself. He was proud to see how his Alma Mater has transformed into Moldova’s most technologically advanced and digitized university.
He highlighted UTM’s exceptional university management system, which offers real-time communication via the “Universitatea Mea” platform, systemic access to content, and study programs validated by world-renowned companies and universities, such as Office 365 for Education and UTM-MOODLE. The university also provides integrated courses, content in multiple international languages with translation support, unique project modules, and internationally recognized certifications.
Additionally, UTM boasts a comprehensive management and support system featuring unique performance analysis techniques, including Turnitin anti-plagiarism, a digital grade book, an electronic registry, computerized assessment for Mathematics and Physics, and unique wireless infrastructure across all campuses. The digital platform for first-year courses—lectii.utm.md—modern access control in dormitories, and a state-of-the-art library system with digital repository access and Pearson VUE Select and Certiport testing centers are among the many technological solutions in place.
“My advice to you, dear first-year students, is to study consistently everyday! Take full advantage of everything the academic community has to offer and fully savor the joy of student life at UTM,” emphasized Vice-Rector ȚURCANU.
Vice-Rector for Finance and International Relations, Daniela POJAR, welcomed the future architects and urban planners newly enrolled at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning (FUA). Joined by Sergiu BEJAN, former FUA dean and current General Director of the State Road Administration, they encouraged the students to embrace their academic and professional journey with innovation and determination. Mr. Bejan emphasized that UTM stands as the country’s leading institution for training specialists in architecture and urban planning, fields that are crucial to shaping Moldova’s future.
Vladislav REȘITCA, First Vice-Rector for Studies, accompanied Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Vladimir BOLEA, at the opening ceremony held at the Faculty of Agricultural, Forestry, and Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Deputy Prime Minister Bolea noted the rise in enrollment at agricultural faculties, signaling a growing need for experts in the field. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing a high-quality educational environment that meets the demands of the labor market, underscoring that education and science are key to revitalizing Moldovan agriculture.
“In the Mircești campus, you will find everything you need to discover your true potential and become elite professionals in your fields. I urge you to seize every opportunity our university offers, study with passion, and actively contribute to the development of Moldova’s agricultural and veterinary sectors. Welcome to the UTM family,” added Vice-Rector Vladislav REȘITCA.
The inauguration ceremonies at UTM were filled with excitement and optimism for what’s to come. With a 60-year legacy, the university continues to be a beacon of excellence in education and innovation. The 3,600 students starting their Bachelor’s degrees and the 700 pursuing their Master’s are eager to tackle new challenges and contribute to UTM’s ongoing success. They are confident that their time at UTM will pave the way for outstanding achievements in their future careers.
