65 FCIM-TUM students competed in “Database Management”

65 students from the Department of Software Engineering and Automatics (ISA) from Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics (FCIM), participated in the 4th edition of the contest “Database Management”, held online on the platform Microsoft TEAMS.

The participants in the competition were greeted by assoc. prof., Dr. Dumitru CIORBĂ, dean of FCIM, assoc. prof., Dr. Ion FIODOROV, head of ISA Department, and Dorian SARANCIUC, professor of the “Database” course and the moderator of the competition, who urged the students to fully embrace their ingenuity, inventiveness and imagination, and exploit the knowledge and analytical, design and management skills acquired during the Database courses. The competition aims to bring forward the technical creativity and team spirit of those participating.

The contestants students of the study programs “Information Technology”, “Information Security” and “Software Engineering” – were tasked with developing a database for Bank deposits, which would contain information about customers, current and deposit accounts of the branches in which the accounts are opened, the conditions for attracting deposits and their types, and money transactions. In stage I, the students were to logically design a Database, which would include collecting the necessary information and recording it in the database, dividing it into tables by categories (customers, accounts, branches), configuring the relationships between the tables, and applying the normalization rules for data. When creating the tables and defining the constraints, the students were to use the SQL language, represented in a single script with comments, launch the code and present the BD diagram. Stage II included 3 steps: Database administration; Database query (5 queries in SQL 5, using the functions of aggregation, grouping, subquery and joins); performing various transactions registering a new customer, opening a current account and a deposit account, linked to the account; entering the amount of money in the account; the transfer of money from the current account to the newly created deposit account.

During the 8 hours of the competition, the 13 teams demonstrated their ability to work in teams, formulate and distribute tasks and manage time efficiently in terms of logical database design, table creation and defining integrity constraints, managing, querying and performing transactions in the database – skills the students acquired during the “Databases” courses.
