GreenTech Hub Launch Sets New Direction for Moldova’s Green Economy

The Technical University of Moldova has launched GreenTech Hub Moldova, a new center dedicated to green technologies, the circular economy and applied research. The launch took place at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Geodesy and Cadastre.

Created within UTM, the center is meant to support Moldova’s green transition through practical solutions that can be tested, developed and applied in real conditions. GreenTech Hub Moldova will bring together the university, companies, start-ups, public institutions and international partners around projects connected to sustainability and innovation.

The launch event gathered representatives from academia, public institutions, international organizations and Moldova’s innovation ecosystem. The program included a discussion on the role of green technologies in economic development, the presentation of the GreenTech Hub vision, the signing of a cooperation memorandum and a guided tour of the center. Participants also visited the innovation and testing laboratory, along with the areas designed for collaboration and prototyping.

Speaking about GreenTech Hub’s role in supporting the green transition and economic competitiveness, Sergiu Rabii, Director of the Innovate Moldova Programme, said:

“GreenTech Hub was created because Moldova needed a platform focused on the green transition, European integration and alignment with the goals of the European Green Deal. Through this initiative, we want to support green innovation, because a country’s competitiveness increasingly depends on its ability to innovate. We need new economic models, new opportunities for businesses and more applied solutions at national level."

GreenTech Hub Moldova will support projects across seven priority areas:

  • green construction;
  • energy efficiency;
  • water and air technologies;
  • urban mobility;
  • circular economy;
  • waste management;
  • digital climate solutions.

These areas reflect both the current needs of the economy and Moldova’s efforts to align with European standards. The center will offer infrastructure for testing, prototyping and validation, giving students, researchers, start-ups and companies a place to work on solutions designed for real-world use. The focus is on ideas that can be developed, tested and turned into projects with practical value for the economy.

Speaking about GreenTech Hub’s role in UTM’s innovation ecosystem, Rector Viorel Bostan said:

“GreenTech Hub adds to the network of innovation centers developed at UTM. Its role is to support innovation in the circular economy, energy efficiency and sustainable construction, while also creating a space for those who want to build businesses in these areas. We want students and future graduates to have access to entrepreneurship, new technologies and applied solutions for Moldova.”

The initiative is being developed through a partnership between the Technical University of Moldova, the Innovate Moldova Programme, funded by Sweden and the United Kingdom, UNDP Moldova, the European Union and other partners.

With the launch of GreenTech Hub, UTM continues to bring education and research closer to applied projects. The hub gives the university a new space for collaboration, where academic, institutional and business partners can turn expertise into practical results for Moldova.
