The UTM team – second place in the International Minifootball Tournament

The international minifootball tournament, the first of such amplitude organized by the Technical University of Moldova after 2000, lived up to the set expectations – an event through which the Department of Physical Education and Sport (DEFS) , led by prof. and dr. Anatol POPUȘOI, emeritus coach, paid a tribute to UTM, which celebrates, in the current year, 55 years since its founding. 

The tournament was held at the UTM Sports Complex on October 18-20, at the initiative of the rector of UTM, prof. and dr. Viorel BOSTAN, Department of Physical Education and Sport, jointly with the University Career Information and Guidance Center, Social Directorate, Technical Directorate, International Relations Service, Methodological-Didactic Center, Technology Center and other component structures of UTM.

The student teams that participated in the tournament were from:

  • Transylvania University, Brașov;
  • “Stefan cel Mare” University, Suceava;
  • “Yuriy Fedkovych” National University, Chernivtsi;
  • Technical University of Moldova, Chisinau.

On Saturday, 19.10.2019, starting at 09:15, the teams, accompanied by UTM students wearing national costumes, lined up for the opening celebration. After singing the National Anthem of the Republic of Moldova and Gaudeamus Igitur, the vice rector of UTM Dinu ȚURCANU came with a greeting message, marking the start of the tournament.

The National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOS) and the Moldovan Football Federation (FMF) were noted as partners of the Tournament. First vice-president of CNOS, Nicolae PIATAC, awarded gifts with the CNOS symbols to the captains of the teams, and FMF offered them a soccer ball and a pennant. Afterwards, the representatives of the four teams laid flowers at the monument of Stefan cel Mare in the center of the capital.

The first round was played starting at 10:00 am. UTM and Suceava teams met on the no.1 field, the final score being 3:3, and on the field no. 2, the Brașov and Cernăuți teams scored 4:3. In the second round, from 11:30 am, the UTM – Cernăuți game, and on the no. 2 field, the Brașov – Suceava game finished with the score 7:17 and 4:4 respectively. During the breaks, the participants of the tournament were delighted with a musical program organized by UTM students.

In the second half of the day, the match Cernăuți – Suceava ended with a score of 10:1, and the game between UTM and Brașov – with a score of 4:3.

Thus, on the fourth place was team Suceava, 2 points. With 4 points, the Brașov team ranked third, and, with the same number of points, the UTM team ranked second. The first place, with 6 points total, was won by the Cernăuţi team. 

In a solemn setting, presided by the vice rectors of UTM Dinu ȚURCANU and prof. Mircea BERNIC, the participants were awarded diplomas according to their rank and commemorative medals “55 years of UTM”, and the teams – with cups and plaques. The winning team received T-shirts with the UTM logo, as well as the best players of each team:

  • Goalkeeper – Fabian PETRESCU, Brașov;
  • Quarterback – Paul IONESCU, Suceava;
  • Forward – Dumitru CEBAN, Chisinau;
  • Best scorer – Grigorii ROMANIUC, Chernivtsi.

The organizers express sincere gratitude to all those who contributed to the process, especially to Mr. Valentin FURDUI, president of Carpen Arena, as official partner of UTM, but also to the Moldovan Football Federation, which has delegated four qualified referees for the matches.
