UTM Takes Top Honors at the 2025 National Doctoral Thesis Competition

Researchers from the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) earned top recognition at the latest edition of the National “Doctoral Thesis of Excellence” Competition, validated by ANACEC. Their award-winning work covers key areas such as intelligent systems, food technology and renewable energy, highlighting UTM’s growing contribution to technological progress in Moldova.

This year’s results stand out for both the range of topics explored and their relevance to current research and industry needs:

  • Eugeniu Munteanu, PhD in Engineering Sciences, received the first-degree award for his research on intelligent systems for contactless measuring equipment. His thesis, “Development of Embedded Intelligent Systems for Contactless Measuring and Control Equipment,” places UTM among the institutions advancing automated control solutions.

  • Tatiana Ceșko, PhD in Engineering Sciences, received the second-degree award for her work on extracting dietary fibers from horticultural sources. Her thesis, “Technologies for Obtaining Dietary Fibers from Horticultural Sources,” proposes sustainable solutions for healthier nutrition and a more modern food industry.

  • Alexandru Banari, PhD in Engineering Sciences, received the third-degree award for research focused on improving the production of solid biofuels from plant residues. His thesis, “Improving the Production Flow of Solid Biofuels from Pomological and Viticultural Plant Residues,” offers a practical contribution to Moldova’s green energy security.

  • Viorica Lupu, PhD in Communication Sciences, received the second-degree “Alexei Rău” Award for her research on data management in modern libraries. Her thesis, “The Role of the Academic Library in Research Data Management,” addresses a topic closely linked to faster access to scientific information.

Behind these results are the mentors who guided the research and helped turn academic rigor into strong doctoral work. For supervising the awarded theses, ANACEC presented Diplomas of Merit to Associate Professor Sergiu Zaporojan, PhD; Associate Professor Aliona Ghendov-Moșanu, Doctor Habilitated; Professor Grigore Marian, Doctor Habilitated; and Professor Nelly Țurcan, Doctor Habilitated.

“These distinctions recognize the work of an entire community committed to bringing research up to international standards. They reflect our investment in laboratories, but above all in people and in a culture built around performance,” said Professor Rodica Siminiuc, Doctor Habilitated, Director of UTM’s Doctoral School.

Recognition at this level is an important milestone in any researcher’s career.

“This award motivates me to turn the results of my thesis into solutions that can be applied directly in local industry. At UTM, I had the freedom to experiment and the support I needed to take an idea from concept to a working system,” said Eugeniu Munteanu, winner of the first-degree award.

UTM’s strong results in the National “Doctoral Thesis of Excellence” Competition have become a well-established tradition. Year after year, the university strengthens its role as a hub of innovation, training specialists ready to respond to today’s economic and environmental challenges.
