The Largest Coding Marathon in the Republic of Moldova, hosted by the Technical University of Moldova

The foundation of a sustainable future is laid in the present, with the most efficient long-term investment being in education—nurturing the potential of the youth. UTM is committed to actively supporting quality education, fostering innovation, and preparing the young generation for the professions of the future. Through engaging in initiatives focused on digital development, UTM makes substantial contributions to the overall progress of the country.

On January 27th, the UTM Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics hosted the third edition of the Algorithm Programming Marathon in C/C++. The competition took place simultaneously in Chisinau, for participants from the southern and central regions of the country, and in Balti, for students from the northern part of the Republic of Moldova, gathering over 90 students passionate about mathematics and computer science.

During a 3-hour span, the participants tackled four problems related to everyday and social activities. Their challenge involved identifying suitable algorithms and writing the code in the C/C++ programming languages.

Dumitru CIORBĂ, Associate Professor, Ph.D., and Dean of the Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics, delivered a motivational message during the competition:

“The high school students of today are the university students of tomorrow, and the Technical University of Moldova is intent on supporting them from their high school years onward. The ‘Tekwill Junior Ambassadors’ competition, organized in collaboration with UTM, has successfully captivated the interest of hundreds of students over the past three years. Our common goal is to provide these students with future prospects in the field of technology and innovation, right here in our country. We aim to inspire them to pursue their passions and develop their skills in this field. Congratulations to all participants, and we look forward to welcoming them again in 2025, this time as students of the Technical University of Moldova.”

Ernest BÎTCA, Assistant Lecturer within FCIM-UTM and Project Manager of “Tekwill in Every School,” shared his thoughts:

“Over the past 3 years, the ‘Tekwill in Every School’ project has made a significant impact on the development of programming skills of students across the country, encouraging them to consider a career in the IT field. Each year, the Programming Marathon brings together the most talented students from various schools and challenges them with intricate coding tasks within a limited time frame. This competition serves as an fantastic opportunity for these young, enthusiastic individuals to showcase their abilities, learn, and surpass their own limits.”

The competition’s primary objective is to provide students from across the country with an exceptional platform to test and enhance their knowledge in the field of IT, while discovering and promoting new talents in programming. Beyond preparing participants for local and national olympiads in Informatics, it serves as a catalyst for creativity and programming aptitude, significantly contributing to the formation of the next generation of programmers in the Republic of Moldova.

Eligibility for participation extended to all students who completed the “Algorithm Programming in C/C++” course under the “Tekwill in Every School” initiative. A panel of industry professionals selected the best contenders based on their accumulated scores. Over the span of the three editions, the Algorithm Programming Marathon in C/C++ has engaged the participation of over 600 students from different regions across the country.

The Algorithm Programming Marathon in C/C++ is organized as part of the “Tekwill Junior Ambassadors” National Competition, hosted by the UTM Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics. This collaborative effort involves the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova and the financial support of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova and Sweden.
