During November 11-12, 2022, the Department of Horticulture of the UTM Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, with the support of the Project “The impact of macro environmental and geographical factors on the bankruptcy and business performance of economic entities from the agro-food sector in the Republic of Moldova”, organized the International Scientific Symposium “The Agri-food sector – achievements and prospects”.

At the opening of the event, Univ. Prof., Dr. habil. Vasile TRONCIU, vice-rector for Research and Doctorate at UTM, emphasized the importance of the event for agricultural science in the Republic of Moldova, as well as the essential role of research in providing solutions to existing problems in society. As mentioned by the professor, the symposium is a good opportunity to develop joint projects and partnerships.

Acad., Univ. Prof., Dr. habil. Boris GĂINĂ and the dean of the UTM Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Assoc. Prof., Dr. Sergiu POPA, spoke about the need to organize symposia and conferences for the presentation and dissemination of research results, especially concerning agroecology and food safety.

Assoc. Prof., Dr. Gheorghe NICOLAESCU, who is also the initiator of this event (now at its 2nd edition), underlined the necessity to organize such a symposium both for the academic community and to respond to society’s needs to implement and practice modern agriculture. The professor presented statistical data regarding the number of participants, the participating research institutions, the number of presentations from each country, etc.

Thus, the meeting brought together representatives of the national and international academic community from 6 countries (Republic of Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, Turkey, Italy and the Russian Federation) and allowed for the presentation of 101 scientific papers.

The topics approached referred to the development of the Agri-Food sector in the context of the changes and challenges of today; the situation regarding the development of sustainable agriculture in the Republic of Moldova; the different solutions and recommendations for producers and decision-makers concerning the assurance of food safety in the country.

The presented theses and paper summaries will be published in a volume dedicated to this event.

The International Scientific Symposium “The Agri-food sector – achievements and prospects” will open up more opportunities for the study of matters related to the development of a resilient agricultural sector, constituting an excellent framework for the exchange of ideas and experiences, while contributing to the facilitation of communication between researchers and the development of new partnerships and collaborations.
