FCIM: PBL – an example of the interaction with industry

Ensuring the successful and effective training of qualified engineers with a compelling set of skills and knowledge requires the involvement of the business and industry environment in the educational process within academia. What once was an opportunity has now become a necessity in the age of digitalization and continuous change. This is the case for the “Software Engineering” study program (head of program: Mariana CATRUC) within the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics, in which Problem-Based Learning is promoted and applied, perfectly combining theory with practice and the academic environment with the industry one.

Identifying the problems and coming up with viable solutions for them has been the main focus of the internship carried out by the second year students of the Software Engineering program, thus contributing to the creation of a durable connection between FAF-TUM and COMPLEXICA – leading provider of artificial intelligence software applications for optimizing sales activities and marketing. With the support of Elena GOGOI, head of Internationalization, PBL coordinator and Curriculum Development, during the two-week internship, but also after its completion, the students benefited from the assistance of the manager of COMPLEXICA, Svetlana COREȚCHI-LOCOMAN, and from the technical guidance of the mentors Eugen SCLIFOS and Artiom OSTAVCIUC during the development of the team project.

Professor Elena GOGOI mentioned that internships and the strengthening of the collaboration relations with companies are the main pillars in the thorough training of future engineers: “PBL – bridging work and education!”

In this regard, Dumitru CIORBĂ, dean of FCIM, emphasized that “multiple interactions and cooperations with companies help us better understand the requirements of the market, but most importantly, motivate students and provide them the assurance that their mentors at FCIM- TUM are in sync with the industry sphere”.

The students and teachers expressed their gratitude for the unconditional support of the TUM administration, the rector Viorel BOSTAN and the vice-rector Dinu ȚURCANU, who participate in the development of collaboration relations for the benefit of future graduates and their training process as specialists.
