FUA-UTM marked World Recycling Day with an ECO DESIGN seminar

The Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Technical University of Moldova marked the World Recycling Day, March 19, 2021, through an expressive scientific-practical seminar, conducted online, with the title ECO DESIGN. Furniture pieces, sustainable lighting fixtures, 2nd edition.

The initiative belongs to Assoc. Prof., Dr. Angela MUNTEANU, organized with the support of Assoc. Prof., Dr. Aurelia CARPOV, Head of the Architecture Department. The event was a conclusive proof of the consolidation of the creative industry amid architecture and design, a synthesis between art, science and engineering, but also a platform for the exhibition of the innovative concepts and visions of student architects and designers, in terms of furniture and lighting fixtures made from recycled materials, created within the courses: Architecture of Interior Space II (Architecture program, year 5), students of gr. ARH-161, ARH-162; and Eco Design, Innovation and Creativity. Engineering bionics (architecture, interior design) (Interior Design program, year 1, Master), students of gr. DI-201 M.

Displaying several examples of wood recycling, student Valeria CUPCEA pointed out: “We often notice objects thrown in the street, which eventually become polluting waste; this is where ideas on how to reuse them and give them a second life start surfacing, for example – a piece of decor, furniture, toys, etc. One more instance would be dry trees, which must be removed in order to avoid the danger of damage and be used as wood for an eco-friendly piece of furniture.”

Student Tetiana HITSAN brought to the fore the tsugite technique – often seen in altars and temples, this wooden carpentry art is admired for its beauty, but also for its durability benefits. Using wooden pieces that fit like a puzzle, the wood can be joined without nails, glue, metal brackets or fasteners, so that when demolished, it is perfectly degradable. ”

In conclusion, the students quoted W. F. Goethe: “Nature is always right, and the errors and faults are always those of man.”

The design models of useful and functional objects, with a well-defined aesthetical aspect, framed according to the stylistics of interior design, presented by Bachelor students and Master students, under the aegis of FUA-UTM professors, conveyed, in a very expressive way, an important message, focused on the awareness and protection of the Earth, based on recycling and reuse: good quality well-made furniture with better durability and longevity contributes to improving the health of the planet, by saving forests and other natural resources.
