The Technical University of Moldova has reached a significant milestone in its engagement with the global research community by integrating its Institutional Repository (IRUTM) into BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine), one of the largest academic search engines in the world.
Achieved in May 2024, this integration is the result of sustained efforts by the Scientific Library and the IT and Communications Directorate of UTM. Through this integration, the Technical University of Moldova gains increased international visibility. BASE provides access to over 340 million documents from more than 11,000 content providers, enhancing the impact and prestige of UTM researchers’ scientific works in the global research community.
To facilitate integration with BASE, the UTM Repository configured an OAI-PMH server (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting). This protocol enables efficient metadata exchange between various systems and platforms, thereby ensuring extended accessibility and more effective dissemination of UTM’s academic resources in the global research community.
Currently, BASE indexes 24,976 documents from IRUTM, offering a robust platform for UTM researchers to showcase their work to a global audience. BASE integrates with other academic tools and platforms, such as OpenAIRE, further improving the visibility and interoperability of the institutional repository’s content.
The integration of ORCID with BASE allows researchers to link their publications to their ORCID profiles, facilitating the import of works for those with user accounts created in BASE. Additionally, interoperability between BASE and Google Scholar allows researchers to be redirected from a publication title found in BASE directly to the corresponding record in Google Scholar.
BASE also provides analytics and usage statistics for documents in the repository, information that can be used to demonstrate the impact of the repository’s content. Users can export citations in various formats compatible with reference management software, thereby facilitating the efficient management and use of academic resources.
The inclusion of UTM’s Institutional Repository in BASE marks a significant step in promoting and disseminating the scientific output of the Technical University of Moldova. Thanks to this achievement, the works of UTM researchers will gain increased recognition, solidifying the university’s position on the international stage of academic research.
