A new scientific paper co-authored by TUM professors was published in the prestigious journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces with impact factor 9.229. Prof., Dr. Oleg LUPAN, univ. lect., PhD candidate Nicolai ABABII, lab. assist., PhD candidate Nicolae MAGARIU, and prof., Dr. Victor ȘONTEA are representatives of the Department of Microelectronics and Biomedical Engineering within the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics.
The 100-page paper titled “TiO2/CuO/Cu2O Multi-Nanolayers as Sensors for H2 and Volatile Organic Compounds: An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation” studies TiO2/CuO/Cu2O multi-nanolayers grown by a cost-effective and reproducible combined spray–sputtering–annealing approach. The presented method allows for the development of high quality nanomaterials with different compositions and crystalline phases. These results provide evidence demonstrating that the ultrathin TiO2 films deposited by spray pyrolysis on top of sputtered–annealed Cu2O/CuO nanolayers enhances their gas sensing performance and improves their protection against corrosion at high temperatures. The theoretical investigation of the affinity of the volatile organic compounds and H2 to the prepared heterostructures shows that the adsorbates interact molecularly with the sensor surface. Ultimately, these assessments represent an important step in the field of nanoscience, microelectronics, cost-effective nanotechnologies, but also biomedical engineering internationally.
The paper is a collaboration with researchers from University of Kiel in Germany, University of Central Florida in the USA, University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, PSL University in France, University of Brescia in Italy, National Center for Biomedical Engineering in Moldova, Sumy State University in Ukraine, Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The TUM professors have established reliable international relations with many prestigious universities and scientific research centers in the European Union and the USA, as well as with neighboring countries.
Thus, the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students of TUM, as well as the teachers of the institution, have the opportunity to carry out extended internships or valuable exchanges of experience in pursuance of disseminating knowledge to the young scholars from TUM, especially to those within the Department of Microelectronics and Biomedical Engineering and the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics.
The Department of Microelectronics and Biomedical Engineering and the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics provide three main study programs jointly – “Applied Electronics”, “Microelectronics and Nanotechnologies” and “Biomedical Engineering” – for Bachelor and Master students, and 5 other specialties for Doctoral students.
This research, reported and assessed internationally, was partially supported by Project G5634, “Advanced Electro-Optical Chemical Sensors” AMOXES and by TUM.
