“Earth Rover: Connecting Things” brings IoT technology to the forefront

Today, at the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics, the “EARTH ROVER: Connecting Things – 2019” International Student Competition for Mobile Robotic Systems and IoT Services has started its 8th edition. In order to participate, 6 teams from abroad (Romania: “Ștefan cel Mare” University of Suceava, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Technical University “Gheorghe Asachi” of Iași, and from Ukraine: National University “Iurii Fedkovici” from Chernivtsi and the National Technical University of Vinnytsia).

The “EARTH ROVER: Connecting Things – 2019” competition involves the integration of mobile robotic systems and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and is dedicated to science and technology, with the goal to train as many young people passionate about robotics, mechatronics, automation, electronics and programming, as possible. The competition aims to stimulate and develop the creativity and the innovative spirit and to offer, for the engineers of the future, opportunities for development through challenges that allow them to implement their ideas and accumulated skills.

The Internet of Things is the most challenging component of developing technologies, which tends to be part of the daily life. It is a concept that defines a world in which all physical objects – devices, vehicles, buildings, industrial equipment and other elements, incorporated with electronic equipment, actuators, sensors and software – are connected to each other through the Internet for surveillance and control.

By organizing this competition, it was desired to open new international collaborations between students and companies in order to ensure the borderless development of a new generation of engineers, programmers and developers of applications and systems.

The objective of the project is to develop a system (within 24 hours), based on a set of devices offered by the organizers, to simulate the behavior of a living being: educational, or of providing monitoring, guidance or command services.

The launch of the contest “EARTH ROVER: Connecting Things – 2019” takes place on Thursday, December 12th, 2019, at 10.00 am on the platform “FabLab Chişinău”, which is part of the Tekwill ICT Center of Excellence, located at. Chișinău, Studenților street, 9/11.

During the progress of the projects, the teams will have the possibility to test their ideas on the mock-up of an apartment with the simulation of different case situations (leakage of gas, smoke, open fire, temperature, humidity, etc.).

The presentation of the final projects will take place on Friday, December 13th, 2019, at 2 pm in the “IMMAGINARIUM” room of the Tekwill ICT Center of Excellence with an Official Ceremony with the presence of the Administration of the Technical University of Moldova, guests from institutions and companies in the field.

The organizing committee of the Competition: Dumitru CIORBĂ – president, Ana ȚURCAN, Victor ABABII, Ion FIODOROV, Radu MELNIC, Viorica SUDACEVASCHI, Gheorghe CEBAN, Victor ȘONTEA, expresses sincere gratitude to the partners and sponsors for the support: USAID, Orange, Allied Testing, Amdaris, ICG Engineering, H&S, Circle, FabLab, Tekwill, but also UTM!
