From Sensors to Nanosatellites: UTM Applied Research at INVENTICA 2026

Projects developed by researchers from the Technical University of Moldova were awarded 16 gold medals and 5 silver medals at the 30th edition of the European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation INVENTICA 2026. The event was held from 8 to 10 July in Iași, Romania.

UTM also received the special “AGIR IAȘI PRIZE” for its participation. The awards recognised projects from several fields, ranging from machinery automation and energy production to environmental monitoring, materials research and space technologies.

UTM’s portfolio included inventions, research projects, patents and patent applications. Among the entries presented were:

  • Horizontal-axis wind turbine with two counter-rotating rotors
    A small-scale energy production system designed for individual consumers. The turbine automatically adjusts to the wind direction and changes the position of its components to improve efficiency.
  • Technology for the oriented growth of single-crystal bismuth films in a strong electric field
    A method that uses both a strong electric field and a laser beam to guide the crystallisation of extremely thin bismuth films in a predefined direction. The technology could support the development of thermal sensors and energy converters with response times potentially thousands of times faster.
  • Research on intelligent methods for monitoring forests, perennial plantations and water bodies using drones
    The system combines drones, artificial intelligence and computer vision to monitor these areas, correlating aerial data with ground-based and satellite information.
  • Research on methods for accurately determining the orbital position of nanosatellites
    A solution that enables more precise nanosatellite positioning than conventional navigation systems. It combines GNSS data, positioning algorithms and neural networks running on small microcontrollers.
  • Modelling and simulation of a photovoltaic pumping system with hydraulic storage and energy recovery
    A model designed to manage irrigation according to available solar energy. The reservoir stores water when solar production exceeds immediate demand, while the turbine recovers additional energy when water is released from storage.

The solutions presented at INVENTICA were developed in UTM laboratories and have practical applications in industry, agriculture and space technologies. INVENTICA brings these solutions to the attention of specialists, institutions and partners who can use or further develop them.

UTM congratulates the researchers and inventors who represented the university at INVENTICA 2026 and contributed to these results.
