On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova celebrated the remarkable achievements of Moldovan female researchers in the fields of science, technology, and innovation. This formal acknowledgment serves to highlight their significant contribution to the scientific progress of the country.
As per statistical data, girls and women make up approximately 50 percent of the total research community in Moldova. Among them, half have attained the title of Doctor, while one-third hold the title of Doctor habilitatus. Additionally, more than half (56%) of doctoral students in Moldova are women, underscoring the increasing representation of women in advanced research pursuits.

The impactful presence of women in Moldova’s scientific landscape has been highlighted by Minister Dan Perciun, who brought forward some remarkable examples:
- Elena DRON (1897-1989): The first female engineer in Romania, originally from Orhei district.
- Maria POCORA (1884-1933): The first female geologist in Bessarabia, born in Bușăuca village.
- Natalia COSTIANU (1922-2005): A renowned mathematician, holding a habilitation degree in physical-mathematical sciences.
- Natalia GHEORGHIU (1914-2001): A pioneer in pediatric surgery in the Republic of Moldova.
These are just a few names the life stories of which inspire and motivate the younger generations.
“I encourage you to share this message, to spread stories of success, and to talk about these role models—women who have excelled in fields that are sometimes seen as traditionally male-dominated. Let’s all work together to inspire the younger generation to pursue high-level, globally recognized science. It’s important to honor the successful researchers in the Republic of Moldova, whose achievements serve as beacons for the youth,” said Minister Dan PERCIUN.
In recognition of the substantial contributions made by female researchers in the country, Minister Dan Perciun handed out Certificates of Appreciation as a token of gratitude for their dedicated efforts in advancing the field of science and research in the Republic of Moldova. Notably, among the awardees were accomplished researchers from the Technical University of Moldova:

- Violina POPOVICI: PhD in Engineering, university lecturer, and laureate of the national competition “PhD Thesis of Excellence of the Year 2022.” Her research focus lies within the field of food science and technology.
- Alexandra CILOCI: PhD in Biological Sciences, scientific research coordinator at the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology at UTM, with an impressive portfolio consisting of 47 invention patents. Her main focus in research is microbial synthesis.

The Minister extends sincere congratulations and appreciation for their invaluable contributions to the promotion and advancement of scientific research. According to Mr. Perciun, each individual represents a true source of inspiration for future generations.
In this context, Secretary of State Adriana CAZACU discussed the primary actions undertaken by the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) to support research and innovation and attract young specialists to these fields. Valentina CHICU, Advisor to the President of the Republic of Moldova on education and research, mentioned the increasing participation of women in Moldova in the field of science, emphasizing their role as inspirational figures for future generations. The panel discussions delved into the accomplishments and success stories of female scientists, shedding light on the policies supporting women in research in the Republic of Moldova.
The Technical University of Moldova exhibits an institutional commitment to fostering gender-inclusive academic environments.
