“Arm control system” at the CIRCLE Student Club, TUM

A group of students from the study program “Automatics and Informatics” within the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics joined forces to create an environment where they can develop their teamwork skills while working on projects in the field of microcontroller programming, built-in electronic modules, and engineering thinking. With the guidance of the univ. assist., mag. Dumitru MORARU from the Department of Software Engineering and Automatics, this is how the CIRCLE Student Club was set up.

The members of the Club divided themselves into teams and chose a theme to study and implement in practice. In a few weeks, the first results appeared. Under the auspices of their mentor, Dumitru MORARU, students Iulia BERGHII, George POSTICA and Denis ȘEREMET created a graphical interface in the Labview application called “Arm control system”, which allows you to obtain the data of the translator #mpu6050 in real time.

The MPU6050 is a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer in one package. The gyroscope measures the angular velocity of rotation around the axis, conventionally in °/s. The accelerometer measures the acceleration along the axis, conventionally in m/s2. Placed in the palm of the hand, the MPU6050 transducer is a good device for obtaining the value set for various automatic systems that can be driven only by gesturing, such as: driving with a mobile robot, controlling a robotic arm with several degrees of freedom, etc.

The implementation of the system consisted of three main steps:

  1. Connecting the sensor to the #Arduino board;
  2. Writing the code for the Arduino board;
  3. Creating the data reception program in the #Labview software package.

In the next stage of the project, the students aim to develop a 4-wheel mobile platform, which will be driven by the operator’s hand gestures.

We wish these ingenious, creative and active students to conquer new heights on their path to success!

Labor omnia vincit – labor conquers all!

CIRCLE is part of the “PLC Programming Continuing Education Course” project and the “Programmable Automata” course development project, supported by USAID and the Government of Sweden within the Tekwill Ambassadors Program, Uteach.
