The Scientific Library of the Technical University of Moldova hosted the anniversary conference “Partnerships, Connections, and Services in Support of the Academic Community,” a highly significant event organized to celebrate both the 60th anniversary of the establishment of UTM and the Scientific Library. The conference underlined the essential role of the library in supporting education and research at the highest level, as well as its evolution in the digital era.
The event was opened by Viorica LUPU, Director of the UTM Scientific Library, who emphasized the library’s contribution to the training and information of students, researchers, and faculty members:
“Over the past 60 years, the UTM Scientific Library has been a pillar of knowledge and an indispensable support for our academic community. Through modern services and strategic partnerships, we have succeeded in aligning with the demands of an increasingly digitalized academic world, thus contributing to the development of science and technology in the Republic of Moldova.”
On behalf of UTM’s leadership, the message of greeting was delivered by Vasile TRONCIU, Vice-Rector for Research, who conveyed the appreciation of UTM Rector Viorel BOSTAN:
“The Scientific Library is not just an institution for documentation but also a driving force for intellectual progress at UTM. Through its resources and initiatives, the library strengthens its role as a strategic partner in the educational process and in research. Today’s anniversary is an opportunity to recognize its exceptional contribution to the evolution of the university.”
The Rector presented appreciation diplomas to the library staff for their outstanding contributions to the ongoing development of the UTM Scientific Library, recognizing their role in supporting education, research, and innovation. The diplomas were given to those whose continued efforts help maintain and expand a rich collection of books and digital resources for students and professors.
A highlight of the event was the speech by Academician Ion BOSTAN, former rector of UTM, who shared a historical perspective on the founding of the Scientific Library. He reflected on how, from the very beginning, the library was not just a place for research, but a symbol of knowledge and dedication in shaping future generations of specialists.
“I’ve witnessed its transformation from a modest space into a true center of excellence,” said Academician BOSTAN. “It’s remarkable to see how far it has come, evolving into a modern, digitized library that meets the demands of today.”
A key moment of the event was the presentation by Zinaida STRATAN, Deputy Director of the Scientific Library, who took the audience through the institution’s journey from its founding to the present. She underscored the significant milestones in the library’s transformation:
“From the first volumes placed on the shelves to the complete digitization of collections and the creation of virtual access for users, we have come a long and challenging way. Today, we take pride in a modern resource management system that provides quick access to high-quality information for the entire UTM community,” said Ms. Stratan during her presentation.
The conference also showcased digitization initiatives and international partnerships contributing to the modernization of the library’s services.
Dr. Dumitru CIORBĂ, Dean of the Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics (FCIM), also extended congratulations and appreciation to the entire team of the UTM Scientific Library, emphasizing the library’s fundamental role in supporting the educational process and research activities.
“The Scientific Library is an indispensable partner for our faculty. Students and researchers at FCIM rely on the resources offered by the library, and the continued digitization of these resources is an example of innovation,” said the FCIM Dean.
The conference included a panel discussion on “The Role of the University Library in the Digital Age,” which brought together experts in education, research, and information technologies. The discussions delved into the challenges and opportunities university libraries face in the context of rapid digital transformations.
The event concluded with an innovative and festive moment that added elegance and inspiration to the anniversary celebration. Participants were invited to attend a fashion show titled “Style and Elegance,” dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the UTM Scientific Library. This fashion show resulted from a creative partnership between the Scientific Library and the Faculty of Design (FD), bringing together the talent and passion of students under the guidance of their professors.
The runway featured original collections that harmoniously blended tradition and modernity, with the central theme being “Knowledge and Innovation through Art.” The outfits were inspired by symbolic elements of the library—ranging from book pages to colors and shapes that evoked the idea of knowledge and academic creativity.
Sergiu TRONCIU, Dean of the Faculty of Design, explained the artistic concept of the presentation:
“This fashion show is a tribute to the 60 years of activity of the UTM Scientific Library, which has always supported each of us, whether in the study process or in research. Through this collaboration, we wanted to illustrate that the library is not just a space for knowledge but also a source of inspiration for creativity and innovation.”
The models were students from the Faculty of Design, who showcased the outfits created by their peers.
Over the past six decades, the UTM Scientific Library has solidified its position as a reference center for research and education. Today’s anniversary marks an important stage in the university’s history but also a commitment to the future in support of academic excellence and innovation.
The event was attended by faculty members, researchers, students, and representatives of partner institutions, who discussed the ongoing impact of the library on educational and scientific development.
