From October 21-25, 2024, the Technical University of Moldova hosted a delegation from Virginia State University (VSU), led by Dr. Dawit Haile, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. This visit marked a new chapter in the collaboration between the two universities, strengthening the partnership established in May 2023 and opening new horizons for academic innovation and development.
The discussions between UTM’s Rector, Viorel Bostan, Professor Dr. Larisa Bugaian, Head of UTM’s ERASMUS+ Center, and the delegation from VSU highlighted the crucial role of internationalization and innovation in education. Dr. Haile emphasized VSU’s ambitious initiatives, such as a Collaborative Hackathon and efforts to support ABET accreditation. These initiatives are vital for aligning UTM with international quality standards. This partnership serves as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange among students and faculty, fostering an environment of creativity and collaborative problem-solving.
The Collaborative Hackathon project, scheduled for early November 2024, will bring together students from three universities—VSU, UTM, and National Taipei University (NTPU). Dr. Joon Suk Lee, Associate Professor at VSU, presented the objectives of this event, which will provide participants with the opportunity to work in teams on real-world IT challenges. The hackathon aims to spark student creativity and promote the development of innovative, applicable solutions, with a direct impact on their professional growth.
During the visit, the VSU delegation was truly impressed by the advanced programs within the Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics (FCIM) and the student projects at the MicroLab Club. Discussions with the Cybercor team opened new opportunities for collaboration in cybersecurity, a critical field in the digital age. Support for ABET accreditation will contribute to the internationalization of UTM’s programs, positioning the university among the world’s most competitive institutions.
The visit also delved into significant economic topics. Dr. Ceslav Ciobanu emphasized the importance of offering online courses within the Master’s Program in Business and Managerial Economics, aimed at attracting students from both Moldova and abroad. This initiative reflects the universities’ commitment to providing accessible education tailored to the needs of the global market.
The partnership between the Technical University of Moldova and Virginia State University is a remarkable example of international academic collaboration grounded in innovation, knowledge exchange, and excellence. Through initiatives like the Collaborative Hackathon and ABET accreditation, these institutions are committed to enhancing education and shaping a new generation of global professionals. The VSU delegation’s visit opened new avenues for research and strategic partnerships, strengthening the relationship between the two universities and promising a bright future for students and the academic community.
UTM continues to be a center of academic excellence and innovation, attracting international partnerships that contribute to high-quality education in Moldova.
