In July 2024, 17 faculty members from the Technical University of Moldova successfully completed an intensive English language course at the International Language Training Center (ILTC). This initiative is part of a pilot project aimed at internationalizing the university, with the goal of attracting more international students to Moldova. The Memorandum of Understanding, signed on April 12, 2024, between the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF), UTM, and the Foundation for Advancement (FAM), marks a significant step towards positioning Moldova as an attractive destination for international educational.
The course curriculum was divided into two main components: grammar lessons and conversation lessons. The primary topics were carefully selected to ensure comprehensive improvement in both general and professional English communication skills.
In addition to developing general communication skills, the course included subjects specific to the disciplines taught by the faculty members, such as mathematical operations, physical phenomena, programming and IT development, project management, statistics, quality management, general management, parasitology, and more.
The sessions were led by Moldovan teachers from ILTC, alongside two exceptional native speakers: Timothy Day from the USA and Darius de Beer from South Africa. Their engaging teaching methods included interactive activities and group work, which ensured the active participation of all attendees. The faculty members greatly benefited from the personalized approach and dynamic teaching styles of these charismatic and talented instructors.
Throughout the course, participants expanded their vocabulary, improved their grammar, and gained valuable experience in delivering presentations to students. The training covered organizing and effectively delivering presentations, focusing on key aspects such as:
- Structuring presentations for clarity and engagement;
- Using visual aids effectively;
- Interacting with students;
- Managing Q&A sessions;
- Adapting language and content to different levels of student understanding.
Participants practiced these skills through various simulated presentations and received constructive feedback to refine their techniques. This hands-on approach ensured they were well-prepared to deliver engaging and informative lectures in English.
To ensure continuous improvement, periodic assessments were conducted to evaluate each participant’s progress and identify areas needing more attention, allowing instructors to adapt their teaching strategies accordingly.
The faculty members expressed their gratitude to the UTM administration, particularly Rector Viorel BOSTAN, as well as to representatives from MEC, WNISEF, FAM, and ILTC for this invaluable opportunity to enhance their English communication skills. As the new academic year begins, the Technical University of Moldova is prepared to offer courses in English, including for international students, underscoring its firm commitment to providing high-quality education.
