From Ecology to Water Engineering: The Inspiring Story of Alexandru SOPOTEAN

In June, first-year students from the UTM Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, enrolled in the “Water Supply and Sewerage” program, experienced the excitement of their first summer exam session. Among them was Alexandru Sopotean, a young man from Chișinău who chose to study water engineering at FUA-UTM after graduating from the College of Ecology.

Alexandru discovered the “Water Supply and Sewerage” program in his final year of college when a team from the Technical University of Moldova presented the university’s educational offerings. Fascinated by the field, he decided that transitioning from ecology to water engineering was a natural step.

“During the informational session, I learned interesting things about the ‘Water Supply and Sewerage’ program and thought it might be a field where I could see myself, and that the knowledge I gained in college would be useful,” Alexandru recalls.

After preparing his application and passing the entrance exams, Alexandru joined hundreds of enthusiastic young people at the opening ceremony of the academic year at the UTM Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning. The first year was intense, full of general courses that laid the foundation for understanding the complexity of water supply and sewerage infrastructure.

“It was a year full of everything – we had challenges, as is expected in a technical field, but it was also very interesting. I made friends, studied new subjects, and received guidance and inspiration from our professors,” says Alexandru, expressing optimism and eagerness to start specialized courses.

For Alexandru, choosing this program was not just an educational decision but also a career one.

“I am proud of my choice, of opting for a profession that is both useful and fascinating. Now, with the water and sanitation sector becoming strategic for our country and significant resources being invested, there is a greater need than ever for professional engineers to handle design and planning,” explains Alexandru.

Alexandru’s story can be an inspiration for young people seeking the right direction for their future. At UTM, Alexandru found dedicated professors and a field where he can excel and contribute to improving the quality of life in Moldovan communities.

“For those who, like me, are at the crossroads of choosing a path in life, I have a message: opt for the ‘Water Supply and Sewerage’ study program at the Technical University of Moldova! Learn to design treatment plants, water treatment stations, and all that pertains to water supply and sewerage infrastructure. Become competitive engineers, because engineers create the future. The future of the Republic of Moldova.”

Through his choice, Alexandru Sopotean shows that transitioning from ecology to engineering is just one step, a step that can open new horizons and bring substantial benefits to the community and the country.
