In the past five years, the Technical University of Moldova has achieved remarkable success in the global ranking of academic repositories, according to the Ranking Web of Repositories. Known as IRTUM, the UTM repository has secured top positions both nationally and internationally, highlighting the University’s significant impact in promoting Open Access to scientific publications and academic visibility.
According to the current edition of the Ranking Web of Repositories, the Technical University of Moldova is ranked 549th globally and first nationally, with 11,100 publications indexed in Google Scholar. Other higher education institutions in Moldova are also included in the ranking but are positioned at a considerable distance behind:
| World Rank | Institutional Repository | Google Scholar Records |
| 549 | Technical University of Moldova | 11100 |
| 1072 | Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy | 5040 |
| 1691 | Ion Creangă State Pedagogical University of Chișinău | 2190 |
| 1898 | Moldova State University | 1680 |
| 2408 | Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova | 899 |
UTM stands out with double the number of Google Scholar records compared to the next institution, the Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, which has 5,040 publications. Compared to Ion Creangă State Pedagogical University, UTM has five times more records, and six times more than the Moldova State University. In contrast with the last-ranked institution, the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, UTM has over 12 times more indexed records in Google Scholar.
These figures highlight the extraordinary performance of the UTM repository in terms of visibility and the number of indexed publications.
As part of the Open Access initiative, in 2016, the Library of the Technical University of Moldova initiated the creation of the Institutional Repository IRTUM, available at repository.utm.md. Registration in the Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) and the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) was a crucial step in increasing the international visibility of IRTUM.
The principles of organization, operation, and administration of the repository are detailed in the IRTUM Regulation. Publications are organized into collections, structured hierarchically into communities and sub-communities, providing easy and intuitive navigation. The hierarchical structure of the repository can be explored at http://repository.utm.md/community-list.
Recently, the UTM repository collection surpassed 25,600 records, with numbers increasing daily. This continuous expansion contributes to UTM’s improving position both nationally and globally, demonstrating UTM’s ongoing commitment to promoting research and innovation through open access.
Consistently ranking first nationally in the Ranking Web of Repositories and 549th globally reflects the significant impact and international visibility of the UTM repository. This success results from continuous efforts to support open access to scientific publications and integrate academic resources into the global information space. The UTM repository not only consolidates its role as a national leader but also contributes to promoting knowledge and innovation worldwide.
