Digital Transformation and the Impact of AI on Cybersecurity: A Discussion on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

The Technical University of Moldova joined the global community in celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Spearheaded by the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications and its Department of Telecommunications and Electronic Systems, the university collaborated with the “CYBERCOR” National Institute of Cybersecurity Innovations and the Development Foundation of the Republic of Moldova. Together, they organized a roundtable discussion on “Digital Transformation and the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Cybersecurity in Telecommunications and Information Technology.”

World Telecommunication Day commemorates the signing of the International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865. World Information Society Day, adopted by the UN General Assembly in March 2006, has been celebrated annually on May 17 since 2006, highlighting the significance of the Internet and information and communication technologies.

At the opening of the event, Prof. Viorel BOSTAN, PhD, Rector of UTM, emphasized that telecommunications and information technology stand as some of the most dynamic and advanced fields in Moldova, playing a crucial role in the country’s progress and socio-economic transformation. With a wide array of study programs in these areas, the Technical University of Moldova takes on the responsibility of advancing technology by preparing qualified specialists. Acknowledging the ongoing efforts in developing this vital sector, the Rector extended sincere congratulations to all programmers, internet network administrators, VoIP service providers, web portal creators, and professionals in the field of information technology.

UTM’s Vice-Rector for Digitalization, Assoc. Prof. Dinu ȚURCANU, underscored the importance of addressing cybersecurity challenges and spoke on the role of artificial intelligence in the development of telecommunications. Mr. Țurcanu called for collaborative actions to proactively prevent and mitigate risks in information technology, combat misinformation, and safeguard personal data from exploitation. Additionally, the Vice-Rector stressed the significance of promoting cyber diplomacy and resilience in response to current challenges.

Assoc. Prof. Lilia SAVA, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, highlighted the event’s focus on examining the influence of digitalization and cybersecurity on telecommunications while fostering the development of ICT specialists. Ms. Sava pointed out the notable increase in the number of active companies within the sector, bringing to the fore a collective commitment to progress. This ever-evolving industry offers numerous employment opportunities for students and graduates of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, with teachers using the latest teaching methods to cultivate skills aligned with industry needs.

The discussion provided a valuable platform for exchanging ideas and expertise on digital transformation, the impact of AI on cybersecurity, and the training needs of ICT specialists. The event drew attention to the importance of collaboration among universities, industry, and government in ensuring a prosperous and secure digital future for Moldova.
