The Technical University of Moldova has launched a series of events as part of the Foreign Languages Week, held from April 1st to 5th. Organized by the Department of Foreign Languages at UTM led by Assoc. Prof., PhD Svetlana CATERENCIUC, the goal is to celebrate and promote linguistic diversity, highlighting the continuous importance of learning foreign languages throughout life.
In his speech, the UTM Rector, Prof. Viorel BOSTAN, addressed the relevance of foreign language proficiency for each student and the many opportunities this competence opens both during their academic journey and in their prospective careers: “Let us never underestimate the power of a foreign language! Today, in the era of globalization, the ability to speak a foreign language is not just an advantage but a necessity. Linguistic skills foster collaboration and understanding between countries and people. Learning a foreign language is also a journey into another culture, another way of thinking, and another perspective on the world. Therefore, for every student here, studying a foreign language should not only be an academic requirement but a personal journey towards self-development and knowledge enrichment.”
The agenda of the Foreign Languages Week includes a variety of activities aimed at drawing attention to the importance of foreign language learning. These activities range from scientific presentations by students from all faculties of UTM to thematic roundtable discussions on topics such as “The Symbolism of Romanian Traditions” or “The German Language in the Engineering Environment,” poster contests, video contests, essays, and terminology sheet contests.
In an increasingly globalized world, companies seek employees with linguistic and intercultural skills, and knowledge of a foreign language becomes an essential advantage. Thus, students are encouraged to actively participate in these events and reap the benefits.
Furthermore, studying foreign languages plays a crucial role in implementing UTM’s Institutional Internationalization Strategy, facilitating international cooperation and student mobility through programs like Erasmus+. The participation of students and faculty from UTM, as well as from other partner universities abroad, such as the University of Craiova in Romania and the Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University in Ukraine, highlights the international nature of the Foreign Languages Week at UTM.
The event serves as a valuable platform for promoting continuous foreign language learning and strengthening international collaboration in education and research, helping students and partner universities to thrive in a globalized world.
