Technology and Innovation at TEKWILL Expo Day

Today is a special day for the Technical University of Moldova! Hundreds of young people and adults passionate about innovation and technology, enthusiasts and specialists in the field, state structure representatives, all gathered at TEKWILL Expo Day to celebrate technology through innovation and science, marking the 5th year of activity of the TEKWILL community.

The TEKWILL Center of Excellence in ICT within UTM granted entrance to all beneficiaries of its programs, as well as to the general public, IT companies, SMEs benefiting from its products, teachers, students, children and parents. The event aimed to showcase technologies developed and implemented by Tekwill and which are used in the educational process.

An extensive exhibition of innovations created by students and professors of the Technical University of Moldova from FCIM, FIMIT, FUA, organized in collaboration with the Center for Career Counseling and Guidance, attracted the attention of the public: the first electric vehicle manufactured in Moldova, a smartphone-controlled electric car, a robotic arm that moves objects without touch, robots, various applications, web pages created for small entrepreneurs, projects dedicated to the development of the IT workforce and entrepreneurship.

The agenda of the event included workshops for target groups: children, school students, students of vocational schools, and teachers. The classes combined education with fun activities, including raffles with prizes directed towards learning engineering.

According to the head of state, with the help of our development partners, over several years, Tekwill projects have inspired and motivated our young people, and today, we can see the fruit of their work: programming robots, integrated systems, artificial intelligence. Moldova is embracing information technologies and is actively preparing the new generations for the professions of the future.

“I encourage children and young people to continue exploring this field, and I thank the teachers who, through their enthusiasm, give life to ideas that change the world. At the same time, I want these learning methods to reach all children in Moldova. Because then we will really see the enormous potential of the people in our country. We must also invest in teachers, on whom the quality of education depends, and ensure equal opportunities for development for all children, regardless of the village or city where they live”, mentioned the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia SANDU.

The impressive achievements of TEKWILL were almost imaginable 5 years ago, as mentioned by the rector of the Technical University of Moldova, univ. prof., Dr. Viorel BOSTAN, who noted:

– In 2014 I promoted this project at UTM, but I could not then imagine the scale of the activities that Tekwill will conduct and its effects on our university and beyond. Tekwill served us as a source of inspiration and a generator of opportunities, facilitating the great transformation that the Technical University of Moldova went through together with the academic community. Today, I can say that we are proud of the university that will launch the first satellite of the Republic of Moldova, the university which created the first electric car and which fully contributes to the development of such an important sector as the ICT sector. Tekwill was the turning point where I understood that things could be done differently. Tekwill was, and still is, a platform on which we can finally have a direct dialogue with the industry, and the industry has proven to be willing to help us a lot in our development.

More messages of appreciation were spoken by the officials present at the event: Sergiu GAIBU, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Moldova; Olga TUMURUC GAIVAS, director of the Electronic Government Agency; Janis MAZEIKS, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova; Scott HOCKLANDER, Head of Mission of USAID Moldova; Andreea CUZYOVA, deputy director of UNDP Moldova; Madelene EICHORN, program manager, Swedish Embassy in Moldova, and others.

The activity of TEKWILL was also applauded by Anatolie TOPALĂ, Minister of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova, who declared: “The development of information technologies and their use in the educational process is a very important matter. We are glad that we have the support of partners and universities in preparing as many courses for schools as possible, so that our students have the opportunity to continue to embrace these professions and create a better future for themselves, as well as develop our country’s society. Even recently, with the support of our partners, we obtained a $ 5 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education, which will also be geared towards digitization in education. We will create new educational opportunities for children, equip schools with technology, improve curricula and train teachers to be able to provide digital knowledge to students”.

– It is an honor to see you today at Tekwill, since we aim to bring the world of technology closer to our everyday lives, underlined Ana CHIRIȚA, director of strategic projects at ATIC. Over the years, we set out to try to help grow a very dynamic sector – the IT sector in the Republic of Moldova. We had many partners who believed in us, and today, the Republic of Moldova has something to be proud of.

More than 150,000 beneficiaries from southern, northern and central Moldova have gone through Tekwill programs. Thus, we hope to raise several generations equipped with the best skills, ready to face the challenges of the future. One of the projects that continues the initiated plan is EU4Moldova: Startup City Cahul, funded by the European Union and Sweden, through which we aim to capitalize on the gained content and knowledge for the benefit of economic growth in the south of the country. We expect an impact of about 11,000 beneficiaries in Cahul, who will change the economic attractiveness of the region within 3-5 years.

Currently, 333 schools in the Republic include programs in which the professions of the Future are taught. During the event, a new Summer Program was launched – “Tekwill in Every School”, in which 25 educational institutions in the country will go through a process of transformation by means of implementing information technologies in the educational process, management and organizational development. These were selected through an open competition. The initiative is developed by “Tekwill in Every School”, a program implemented within the Tekwill project, supported by USAID Moldova, Sweden, EU4Moldova and UNDP, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Research. The concept will be piloted starting with the 2022-2023 academic year, in which over 600 teachers will learn how to teach students information in a digital interactive way and get them acquainted with the world of technology.

Tekwill was created in 2017 with the support of USAID and Sweden. As the Center of Excellence of the ICT sector in Moldova, its main goal is to align the IT field with the requirements of the 21st century. In order to continue to contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the IT industry and other strategic sectors of the economy, the Center has expanded its current fields of activity, becoming, in 2019, a complex project at national level. The basic objective of the TEKWILL Project, as a platform dedicated to the progress of the IT sector, is to ensure a major impact on the economic development of the country by improving the entrepreneurial and educational capacities of society members, but also the research and development potential of higher education, in line with the demand in the IT market.
