Why is outer space important to us? And are we important for outer space? These questions, not at all rhetorical, were intended to be answered by the participants in the online workshop “The imperative of outer space: dependencies and opportunities”, organized on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at the Faculty of Constructions, Geodesy and Cadastre, with Scott SCHNEIDER, Master of Aviation and Space Law, Head of Regulations at the “Southern Launch” Missile Company in Australia, Deputy Chief of Research at ISU International Space University.
The students interested in spatial data were particularly interested in finding out more about space applications and their use in various fields – geodesy, cadastre, agriculture, defense and security. In this regard, they had the perfect interlocutor for these discussions, Mr Scott SCHNEIDER, an active member of the Space Law Council of Australia and New Zealand and collaborator within the Australian Space Industry Association for identifying and cataloging Australia’s space capabilities.
The workshop started with an opening carried out by the Associate Professor, Dr. Eng. Livia NISTOR-LOPATENCO, Dean of FCGC-UTM, who referred to the study of Global Navigation Satellite Systems GNSS and Remote Sensing RS. The event continued with discussion on two issues of great interest: Why is outer space important for us? And how are we important for outer space?
Scott SCHNEIDER presented a brief history of the development of PNT space technologies for positioning, navigation and time synchronization (or timing). He explained how people benefit from these three types of applications every day – precision agriculture, banking and emergency management, etc. Subsequently, starting from the fact that the ever-growing space market needs more employees involved in space activities, he exposed a wide range of professions on which space activities are based and revealed how nations without a space agency can continue to benefit from the international space market. He also explained to students how they can get involved in the space sector. The opportunities for cooperation with the International Space University in order to develop and modernize the study programs related to Geodesy with Satellite and Remote Sensing were also discussed.
In his capacity as President of the International Space University Conference, taking place between 5-6 February 2021 in Adelaide, Mr. Schneider invited FCGC-UTM professors and students to attend this international meeting promoting the use of outer space for the general public and bringing together the global market in such a way that outer space can provide additional benefits for human life.
