On February 4, 2021, the Department of Telecommunications and Electronic Systems (Head of Department: Assoc. Prof., Dr. Lilia SAVA) of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications invited all teachers and professors to a scientific seminar of the scientists from the Institute of Electronic Engineering and Nanotechnology “D. Ghițu”, Dr. Victor COJOCARU and Dr. Leonid KONOPKO.
The seminar program included two reports: “Device for hypothermic therapy based on fuzzy logic rules” (Dr. Victor COJOCARU) and “The use of the transverse thermoelectric effect for the development of thermoelectric devices. Anisotropic thermoelectric devices based on monocrystalline semi-metal microfilaments” (Dr. Leonid KONOPKO).
The teachers and professors were able to watch the two presentations online and get familiar with the covered topics. Therapeutic hypothermia – a non-pharmacological method that could improve neurological outcomes in some pathologies, such as uncontrolled intracranial hypertension; head trauma; ischemic stroke. It has been mentioned that hypothermia can reduce cerebral oxygen consumption by lowering body temperature through invasive methods – heat transport being directed by a catheter inserted into the femoral vein, but also non-invasive – by methods that come in direct contact with the patient’s skin or by applying cooling devices, which use different cooling compounds.
As a result of the research conducted, the authors built a hypothermia device used for medical purposes for the controlled cooling of tissues using Peltier elements. The use of Peltier cooling elements allows the development of a small mobile device that can be operated in the emergency medical service, helping to reduce the risk of ischemic tissue trauma after heart failure or blockage of embolic arteries.
As emphasized by the participants at the seminar, such meetings contribute to the progress of research activity in higher education institutions.
