The Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Technical University of Moldova returns with an extensive project of redevelopment of one of the most historically symbolic streets in Chișinău – August 31, 1989.
As initiators an developers of this interdisciplinary project of urban metamorphosis, the students-architects of the 5th year aim for a more attractive street for the city, preserving the historical spirit of the architectural monuments, rethinking the functionality of existing buildings and spaces, removing unsightly fences and restoring abandoned or ignored areas. The street is a parallel artery to the central boulevard, always packed with public and private transport, hence the redesign plan of the street also includes an open pedestrian area at both ends, with the prospect of expanding into a green network throughout the city, which will increase the comfort level of urban life, reduce pressure on the public transport and health system and strengthen the ecological balance in the city.
The students presented a number of ideas and suggestions for the redevelopment of this space, with a length of only 3 kilometers, but in which, over time, a string of buildings with compelling historical backgrounds was built: at the intersection with Mitropolit Petru Movilă Street, the headquarters of the Writers’ Union of Moldova was constructed, with an inscription that reminds us of the origin of the name of this street: “In this house took place the first manifestations for the officialization of the Romanian language and the return to the Latin alphabet…”. Further, the National Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, the “Licurici” Theater, the Press House – are all located at the intersection with Pushkin Street. Also here, on the former Kiev street, a century ago, several buildings were built, including that of the Boys’ Gymnasium and the Greek Church – today the Church of St. Great Martyr Pantelimon. Between the former Kiev and Moskovskaya streets, today Stephen the Great Boulevard, several parks and squares had been arranged – a treasure that must be restructured in a green corridor within the city.
In essence, this small artery carries in itself an immense urban and architectural treasure that is to be preserved and capitalized on. That is why, at the launching of the project, the FUA students and professors declared themselves honored to have among the guests notorious personalities, specialists in the field, who will assist them throughout the project: Prof., Dr. Arch. Ioan ANDREESCU, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning – Timişoara Politechnica University; Anatolie GORDEEV, Chief Architect at the Institute of Architecture; Alexandru CORDUNEANU, organizer of the conference “Identities of Chișinău”, Founder of the Civic Group for Cultural Heritage; Andrei VATAMANIUC, architect, founder of the MIEZ Architecture Laboratory, one of the backbones of the Urbanism Center; but also the teachers of the Architecture Department – Aurelia CARPOV, Sorina-Nicoleta GRATI, Elena ARICOVA, Natalia IACHIMOV, Angela MUNTEANU, Mihai DANCIU and Sergiu SEVERIN, directly involved in the project.
We send our best wishes to the student-architects and their teachers in this important project of urban metamorphosis.
