Did you know that microelectronics and nanotechnologies are two of the six key enabling technologies (KETs) that the European Union is developing in order to introduce them into industrial practice? Why? Because it plays an important role in the sustainability of the competitiveness and economic growth of each country. This will allow the EU to keep up with its main international competitors and achieve the goals of the Europe 2020 strategy.

Here are 10 reasons to convince you, dear admission candidates, to opt for the study program “Microelectronics and nanotechnologies” within the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics:

The two fields – Microelectronics and Nanotechnologies – include all the means, methods of human activity required for the design, development and production of electronic and optoelectronic devices, apparatus and systems, integrated circuits, microelectronic systems, and the use of microelectronic systems in electronic installations, computing techniques, automation and electronic systems for various branches of the economy.

The courses covered during the eight semesters of study refer to the science and engineering of high-performance microelectronic systems, materials, structures and devices, based on resizing nanoscale properties and processes and exploring the opportunities of nanotechnologies.

The Department of Microelectronics and Biomedical Engineering operates the Student Club “Dedicated electronic systems and microcontroller applications”, in which over 30 students are involved in research activities related to the engineering of microelectronic systems and the development of various applications based on microcontrollers, innovations and design technologies, dedicated electronic circuits and medical devices.

Within the Club, both individual projects included in the university curriculum and projects for student competitions are worked on, a very important element for the practical implementations of the knowledge acquired at university.

Annually, the department organizes the International Student Contest “Engineering of microelectronic systems – Sergiu Rădăuţan”, which presents applications in the fields of: electronics, programmable circuits, semiconductor devices, systems and applications with microcontrollers, biomedical devices. In 2017, 33 teams from four countries participated.

The Microlab Engineering Club organizes the Summer School “Development of Embedded Systems”, whose concept focuses on:

Maintaining research excellence is one of the department’s priorities, the scientific research being oriented towards national and international projects and programs, including within the Center “Nanotechnologies and nanosensors”, led by prof., Dr. Oleg LUPAN, an internationally recognized scientist based on his scientific papers – Hirsch Index 42,over 350 publications in total, including 155 ISI listed, over 6500 international citations.

The laboratories are equipped with spectrometers, electronic measuring equipment, optical microscopes, diffusion stoves, photolithography installations, vacuum deposition installations, electron microscope – TESCAN company, atomic force microscope – Surface Imaging Systems company, optical microscope – Mobic company, microprocessor systems, reconfigurable devices, etc.
