The Technical University of Moldova is the leader among the universities of the Republic of Moldova, according to the latest report (July 2020 Edition 2020.2.0 updated: http://webometrics.info/en/Europe/Moldova%2C%20Republic%20of) published by Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics) on July 27, 2020, a ranking that analyzes about 30,000 universities around the world, including higher education institutions in the Republic of Moldova.
According to the Webometrics report, UTM ranks first in the Republic of Moldova, 221st in Central and Eastern Europe, 999th in Europe and 3116th in the world.
The indicators taken into account by Webometrics are:
5% – online presence – directly proportional to the size (number of pages) of the main web domain of the institution;
50% – visibility – the number of external networks linking to the webpages of the institution, measurable with Ahrefs and Majestic;
10% – transparency – the number of citations registered by the authors of the institution on the Google Scholar platform;
35% – excellence – the number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited in 26 disciplines (Scimago).
The current ranking came with new rules for the transparency parameter: if previously 10 profiles were excluded from the university’s Google Scholar TOP and the citations of the authors in the TOP 11-110 range were counted, now, the new calculation methodology is based on collecting citations from the first top 210 public profiles of each university, to allow comparisons independent of the number of employees of the institution, with the subsequent exclusion of the first 20 top profiles from the list to improve representativeness. For the other 190 profiles per university, the number of citations is added up, and the institutions are ordered in descending order.
We mention that in the January 2020 ranking, UTM also registered an exceptional result, holding one of the leading positions nationally among the universities of the Republic of Moldova. It is the evident result of the consolidated effort made over the last years by the academic community of the University, according to the Institutional Development Strategy consistently promoted by the rector of UTM, prof., Dr. Viorel BOSTAN.
Certainly, we, the academic community, have a lot of work to do for higher results in the ranking indicators and for obtaining TOP positions in the international ranking.
Webometrics is a ranking developed by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group within the Higher Council for Scientific Research in Spain, since 2004. The ranking is based on publicly accessible web data, the results being made public in January and July, every year.
