I. GENERALE INFORMATION

Department of Microelectronics and Semiconductor Devices (MDS) was founded in 1973 under the merger of Department „Physics of Semiconductors and Semiconductor Devices” headed from its foundation in 1969 by the Doctor of Science, associate professor Ion Molodean and the Department of Industrial Electronics, headed from the its foundation in 1965 by the Doctor of Science, associate professor Vitaly TIRZIU, who headed the new Department until 1980. In the period from 1981 to 2004, MDS Department was headed by member of the Academy of Sciences, university professor, dr.hab., State Laureate of the Republic of Moldova Teodor Sisianu and from 2004 is headed by university professor, Doctor of Science Victor Sontea.

By the decision of TUM Senate of July 2012 the name of the Department was changed into Microelectronics and Biomedical Engineering.

The Department offers study programs compatible with the European Credit Transfer System and adjusted to the exigencies of European education in the field, in the following specialties:

  1. License Studies:
    • 525.4 Microelectronics and nanotechnologies,
    • 526.4 Biomedical Systems Engineering.
  2. Masters Studies:
    • Microelectronics and nanotechnologies,
    • Biomedical Engineering.

The Department prepares engineers, specialists in the fields of microelectronics, biomedical nanotechnologies and engineering based on the modern study programs, in which theoretical aspects are combined with the excellence of practice. The students of the Department benefit from competitive education environment that stimulates creativity, scientific and technical initiative, personal development and active involvement of future specialists in building a knowledge-based society. Within the department activate International Center “Microelectronics Systems and Biomedical Devices Engineering ” (conductor: dr., univ. prof. V. SONTEA), National Center for Support of Nuclear Security, National Centre for Biomedical Engineering.

II. GRADUATES’ AREAS OF ACTIVITY

  • Microelectronics and nanotechnologies are areas of science and technology strictly necessary for the sustainable development of countries with advanced economies and include all of the means, methods of human activity required for the design, development and production of devices, appliances and electronic systems and optoelectronic integrated circuits, microelectronic systems, as well as the microelectronic systems using in electronic installations, computing technics, automation and electronic systems for different branches. Graduates of Microelectronics and nanotechnologies specialty may be committed in enterprises, companies and scientific centers of production, design, research, in positions that involve the following activities:
    • design, implementation and testing of analog and digital integrated circuits;
    • development and implementation of nanotechnologies, new multifunctional materials and electronic microsystems;
    • design, development and operation of hardware and software systems in various fields based on modern technologies;
    • software application development for communication and industrial electronicsbased on microcontrollers;
    • design and implementation universal and dedicated computing systems;
    • reconfigurable architecture systems design and VHDL programming.
  • Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary field where engineering sciences cooperate in solving specific problems of medicine and biology. Biomedical engineering was contoured from the need for cooperation between medical staff and specialists in engineering, computer science and real science to solve interdisciplinary problems related to modernization of the means of treatment, medical research and health technology management. Graduates of Biomedical Engineering specialty may be committed in health centers and hospitals, enterprises and scientific centers of production, design, research, in positions that involve the following activities:
    • Organizing and conducting research on diagnosis and treatment procedures;
    • Technical support for users of clinical and medical technology equipment, performing maintenance, medical equipment planning for the effectiveness, safety and use of medical devices;
    • The utilization and optimizing of medical technologies;
    • Developing health information systems to support the informational processes of diagnosis and treatment;
    • Management of medical technologies.

III. DIDACTIC-METHODICAL ACTIVITY

The basic objectives in didactic methodical activity of the department are:

  • Preparation engineering staff licensed to work in the fields of research, design, use of semiconductor devices, microelectronic systems, development and implementation nanotechnologies production, maintenance, control and diagnose of modern biomedical technique and information systems;
  • Training through Master and PhD of specialists and requalification for the national economy.

To achieve these objectives, at the department is given a special attention to developing and editing of didactic materials necessary to ensure educational process in accordance with the standards and educational plan.

The educational program at specialty “Biomedical Systems Engineering” 526.4  includes fundamental subjects in engineering and medicine, electronics and microelectronic systems, medical electronics, informatics and advanced programming, medical instrumentation and sensors, diagnostics and therapeutics methods, medical technologies management, etc..

The program of education at the specialty 525.4 “Microelectronics and Nanotechnologies” includes fundamental subjects in engineering, electronics and microelectronic systems, advanced programming, design and application of microelectronic systems with advanced technologies, microelectronics technologies, nanotechnologies, applied in various field of industry, the development of software applications for communications and industrial electronics using microcontrollers, application design using signal processors and programmable circuits.

 

IV. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Maintaining the excellence in research is one of the priorities of the department, scientific research being oriented towards the projects and national and international programms.

The main directions of scientific research:

  • Physics and technique of semiconductor materials and development of devices based on them;
  • Nanotechnologies and new multifunctional materials;
  • Technologies with rapid photon treatment for semiconductor devices and sensors;
  • Microelectronic Systems and Biomedical Devices Engineering;
  • Developing, manufacturing and research of solar batteries.

Most collaborators of the department are involved in international and bilateral institutional research projects. The results are presented in publications in various national and international conferences, journals, monographs, etc..

Relevant projects recently carried out within the department:

    • MOLD-ERA project FP7 „Preparation for Moldova’s integration into the European Research Area and into the Community R&D Framework Programs on the basis of scientific excellence”. Masters and PhD students actively participated in events organized by the Department at PC7 MOLD-ERA: organized the first Summer School in nano-bioengineering, biomaterials and biocompatibility in the period 3-7 July 2011, 2012, obtained advanced studies in nano-bioengineering, biomaterials and biocompatibility in 2011-2012, 2012-2013.

Today at the department activate 5 doctors and Habilitate Doctors holding the ability of doctoral supervisors. Department provides doctoral studies at the following specialties:

  • 01.04.10 Semiconductors physics and engineering;
  • 05.13.05 Elements and devices of computing technics and control systems;
  • 05.27.01 Solid body electronics, microelectronics, nanoelectronics.

A special attention is given at the Department to student involvement in scientific research and their preparation to participate in different conferences and student competitions. During many years, teams from the specialties “Microelectronics and Nanotechnologies” and “Biomedical Systems Engineering” participated and won the first places, including the following competitions:

  • Place I – in the contest and the prize of the Technical University “Gh. Asachi “at the VII edition of the” Microcontrollers, microsystems and applications – Mihail Konteschweller”, April 22, 2016, organized by the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology of the Technical University “Gh. Asachi “Iasi, Romania – III year student of specialty “Microelectronics and Nanotechnologies” Stefan MAIMESCU, coord: int.Univ. prof., Dr.hab. Oleg LUPAN for “Multi-Sensor Gas Detector”.
  • Place II – student competition “Electro Mobility” within the event “Open Doors Day-2012”, the VI-th edition, organized by company CONTINENTAL AUTOMOTIVE ROMANIA SRL, work Iasi – Bogdan PODLESNII, Sergiu GORDIENKO, Alexander BABAIAN and Caterina TROCIN for achieving the best communication protocol.
  • Place IV – Competition “Microcontrollers and Applications”  – Michael Konteschweller ETTI, Technical University “Gh. Asachi “, Iasi, Radu POTLOGIA (third year Biomedical Engineering specialty), Simion COBÎLEANSCHII (III year, specialty Microelectronics and Nanotechnology) – 2011.

Starting with 2011 the MIB Department organizes annually Student Contest “Microelectronics Systems Engineering – Sergiu Radautan”. Students submit applications to the competition from the following areas: electronics, programmable circuits, semiconductor devices, systems and applications with microcontrollers, biomedical devices. At the VI edition in the competition in 2016 have been registered 30 teams, including 16 from the TUM, six teams from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Gr. T. Popa ” Iasi, and three from the Technical University” Gh. Asachi “Iasi, three from the College of Microelectronics and Computing Technic, Chisinau, a team from the Polytechnic College in Balti and a team from the State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics in Belarus.

 

V. MATERIAL AND TECHNICAL BASE

The Department disposes of the following didactic and scientific platforms, equipped with modern devices, equipment, measurement electronic devices, technological laboratories, electronic microscopes, microprocessor systems, reconfigurable devices, devices for the detection and measurement of ionizing radiation and other:

  1. National Centre for Biomedical Engineering;
  2. National Center for Nuclear Security within the Technical University;

The Department also has two computer rooms equipped with high performance computing technic and multimedia systems.
