Head of the chair

Vladimir Dragan, Associate Professor, PhD

The chair of Higher Mathematics was founded in May 1964, the time when the Polytechnic Institute of Chisinau (presently called - The Technical University of Moldova (TUM)) was established. The first head of this chair was Valentin Belousov, a famous mathematician, who formed the first chair's staff and had organized the first admission exams. Later in August 1967, Ion Valuta, professor, took over the chair and activated till 1999 (during this long period there was a relatively short time (1977- 1980) when the chair was headed by Mihail Bulat, associate professor, PhD).

The large number of students led to the chair division into: Mathematics 1 (heads of the chair I. Valuța) and Higher Mathematics 2 (head of the chair T. Botea, M. Izman). However, in 1999 they were again merged into one, called the Chair of Mathematics with Mihai Izman as head of the chair).

II. The didactic and methodical activity

The chair's staff teaches the 1st year students the following courses: higher mathematics, linear algebra, math analysis; and to the 2nd up to 5th year students the courses of applied mathematics, the theory of mathematics and math statistics, linear programming, operational studies, etc. The chair also offers courses for Master's Degree candidates.

An important focus of chair's teaching and methodical activity is elaboration of textbooks, didactic materials, articles for pupils and students. Since its creation, the chair published over 70 methodical articles, 100 methodical instruction brochures, 12 textbooks and monographs, including:

  1. A course of mathematical analyses (textbook, 3 parts), Ion Scherbatchi, p. I - 2000, p. II - 2002, p. III - 2004;
  2. Mathematics (textbook for colleges), Ion Valuta (co-author);
  3. Mathematical Analyses (problems, 2 volumes), Ion Scherbatchi;
  4. Functions with many variables, Petre Osmotescu;
  5. Theory of probabilities and mathematical statistics, Pavel Ciumac;
  6. Guide book of Mathematics, Dumitru Botnaru;
  7. Algebra, textbook 9 th grade, Raisa Grigor (co-author);
  8. Math tests, Ana Costas, Mihai Izman;
  9. National Mathematical Olympiads, Mihai Izman (co-author);
  10. Mathematics (Alexandru Molosniuc, etc.);
  11. Integral calculus, Alexandru Molosniuc.

III. Scientific research

The main targets of research carried out by the chair's staff include: mathematical logic, general algebra, ordinary and partial derivative, differential equations. The chair's staff actively participates in scientific projects financed by the Government of Moldova (2003 - the project of P. Osmotescu, professor; 2001 - the project of M. Izman, PhD, associate professor; 2001-2003 - the project of D. Botnaru, DSc, professor).

In 2001 the chair participated in organization of the first Conference of Mathematicians of RM. In 2002 it organized a scientific conference dedicated to the memory of P. Osmotescu (professor), with the participation of Romanian and Moldavian professors.

There is a scientific seminar within the chair of Mathematics, founded by P. Osmotescu. Our professors also take part in the seminars organized by State University of Moldova, Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of RM.

The chair's staff also actively participates in national and international conferences held in Odessa, Cernauti, Kiev (Ukraine), Novosibirsk (Russia), Freiburg (Switzerland), Brasov, Pitesti (Romania), Cairo (Egypt), etc.

Four members of the chair - I. Valuta, D. Botnaru, V. Ursu and V. Dragan - are empowered to co-ordinate the activity of PhD candidates. There is also a DSc candidate member of the chair - Alina Turcan. The students are also involved in scientific investigations. The Chair of Mathematics is an active promoter and participant of all student and PhD conferences.

The staff of the chair published over 200 scientific articles in diverse journals, both Moldavian and foreign.

IV. The technical and material base

The chair disposes of two computers and a printer. It uses the resources and equipment of the FIMM computer centre and the library.

V. Co-operation

The Chair of Mathematics of TUM co-operates with the following institutions: Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of RM; the State University of Moldova; the State Pedagogical University of Tiraspol; University of Pitesti (Romania); University of Odessa (Ukraine). It is planned to initiate co-operation with the chair of Nonlinear Analysis of the Russian Academy of Sciences Computer center, as well as with the University of Sedlite (Poland).

VI. Staff

The chair's staff includes 46 people (42 - full time section and 4 - part time section):

  • 1 head of the chair
  • 3 professors, DsSc
  • 19 associate professors, PhDs
  • 5 senior lecturers, PhDs
  • 9 senior lecturers
  • 9 assistant lecturers
